Developing a PR Mindset for Your Business - Introduction

by Frank Williams, President

The previous two issues of this newsletter have discussed what I believe to be the TRUE foundation of public relations:  strategy.  If your public relations efforts are to be effective over the long haul, they cannot be a mere afterthought -- they must be an integral part of your overall business strategy.  This requires a strategic, long-term PR mindset.

Last week, I delivered a speech on the topic of developing a PR mindset for your business.  This speech was one of the most difficult ones I've written.  It was difficult to write because I had never thought through the process of developing a PR mindset; it comes to me very naturally.  I am blessed with what I will call a "PR Instinct."  Consequently, I had to force myself to take a step back and consciously examine what constitutes a PR mindset.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a "mindset" as a fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations.

Unless you are blessed with a natural PR instinct, developing a PR mindset is about changing the way you think

Developing a PR mindset requires that you begin with a proper understanding of what public relations is and is not.  This may require a paradigm shift in terms of the way you view public relations.

If you would like to begin the process of developing a PR mindset for your business, I encourage you to review the columns linked below:

Future issues of this newsletter will further explore the idea of developing a PR mindset for your business.
