Happy Thanksgiving!
"The
Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been
more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of
thanksgiving."

Developing a PR
Mindset for Your Business - Part II
by
Frank Williams, President
In
last
month's newsletter I introduced the concept of developing a PR
mindset for your business. As stated in that column, the American Heritage Dictionary
defines a "mindset" as a fixed mental attitude or disposition that
predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations.
Unless you are blessed with a natural PR
instinct, developing a PR mindset is about changing the way you think.
It also requires that you begin with a proper understanding of what
public relations is and is not.
In order to develop a true PR mindset for
your business, you must begin with the understanding that PR is more
than simply "free publicity." True public relations involves far
more than simply distributing press releases in order to obtain positive
news coverage for your organization. True PR is not simply "spin,"
as many believe.
As I have stated in previous issues of this
newsletter, I believe strategy is the foundation of true public
relations. If you are to develop a PR mindset for your business,
public relations must become an integral component of your overall
strategic mindset. It must be a priority, not a mere
afterthought. Your public relations efforts must be coordinated
with your other business activities, and your public relations strategy
must be closely linked with your overall business strategy.
In practical terms, what does all of this
mean?
First, you must train yourself to view
every aspect of your organization from a public relations
perspective. This means everything from your business cards to
your customer service department to your product packaging.
Everything.
Second, you must consciously consider how
every action you take might be viewed by groups whose opinions impact
your organization's ability to achieve its goals. This will help you
avoid falling victim to what I call the
PR
Principle of Collateral Damage.
Third, you must discipline yourself to be
proactive when it comes to your public relations efforts. Rather
than waiting for things to happen and responding to them as they do, you
must think three steps ahead and make things happen.
Fourth, you must examine every proposed
public relations activity to determine if it will help advance your
overall business strategy.
As you can see, each of the items listed
above involve changing the way you think. In order to
develop a PR mindset for your business, you must train yourself to
continuously view your business through a PR lens.
