The Pioneer Strategist -- November 2006

"The newest computer can merely compound, at speed, the oldest problem in the relations between human beings, and in the end the communicator will be confronted with the old problem, of what to say and how to say it."

PR Tool:  Sponsorships

by Frank Williams, President

Sponsorships can be an effective Public Relations tool -- if you think through what you are doing and have a method to your madness.  Depending upon the nature of your business there are a variety of sponsorship opportunities available for you to consider, including:

  • Events sponsored by professional organizations

  • Events sponsored by trade or industry associations

  • Events sponsored by business groups (i.e. your local Chamber of Commerce)

  • Events sponsored by civic organizations (i.e. Rotary)

  • Charitable fundraisers

  • Professional sports teams (i.e. minor league baseball)

  • Little League baseball teams.

These are only a few examples of sponsorship opportunities available to your business.

As with any other Public Relations tool, it is important to make sure that your sponsorship will help strengthen your relationship with key publics.  If you operate within specific vertical industries, you may want to sponsor an industry-specific trade organization's event.  If you primarily deal with businesses in a specific geographic area, you may want to sponsor a local Chamber of Commerce event.  If you deal with the general public, you may want to sponsor a local sports team or a civic or community organization's event.

If you decide to take advantage of a sponsorship opportunity, develop a plan to leverage that opportunity.  Request the organization's permission to distribute a press release announcing the sponsorship.  Promote it among your existing client base.  List it on your Web site.  If you are sponsoring an event, find out if it is possible to contact attendees ahead of time.

Regardless of the type of sponsorship you choose to pursue, you should invest the time and energy required to get the most out of it and, in the process, benefit the organization you are sponsoring.
