A Common Misconception
About
Public Relations

by
Frank Williams, President
What pops into your mind when you hear the
term "public relations?"
Far too many people think of "free
publicity." They think only of generating positive media coverage
for their organization by sending press releases or being interviewed by
a reporter.
This view of public relations is both
inaccurate and incomplete.
A true public relations campaign involves
far more than simply distributing press releases. In fact, we work
with some clients for whom we rarely distribute press releases.
Our activities on their behalf include providing advice and counsel,
strategic planning, and the utilization of a wide range of public
relations tools. Beginning in February 2006,
recent issues of
this newsletter have examined a number of potential PR tools you can
put to work. As you will see if you visit
our newsletter
archive, the press release is only one of a number of tools at your
disposal.
The idea that public relations is nothing
more than free publicity obtained by distributing press releases is both
inaccurate and incomplete. Instead, a truly effective public
relations effort seeks to identify and apply the right combination of
tools to achieve an organization's goals.
