PR Tool:  Blogs

by Frank Williams, President

In this age of technology, blogs are becoming an increasingly powerful public relations tool.  Those who know me know that I am a believer in blogging; if not, our firm would not publish its own blog, Public Relations Insights.  However, while blogging can be powerful, it can also be a double-edged sword.

Blog.  n.  An online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page.

The good thing about blogging is that it puts you on the record, provides you with a forum to comment on pertinent issues and allows you to demonstrate your expertise in doing so.

The bad thing about blogging is -- you guessed it -- it puts you on the record and provides you with a forum to comment on pertinent issues.

If you are going to create a business blog, you should carefully think through your purpose before doing so.  Why do you want to publish a blog?  What value can your blog offer to readers?  How will blogging benefit your business or organization?  How can you utilize your blog to showcase your expertise?

It is also important to consider the logistics involved in publishing your blog.  Will you host it on your Web site, or will you use an externally hosted blog?  What topics will you discuss?  How frequently will you be able to post entries?  Are your writing skills up to par?  If not, who will help ensure that your blog posts give your organization the professional representation it needs?

Finally, you should consider the potential pitfalls of blogging.  Depending upon the nature of your organization or business, there may be legal issues that govern what you can and cannot post.  Further, you need to be careful not to reveal trade secrets, confidential client information or other information that could compromise your organization's market position or client relationships.  You should also consider whether or not your blog entries could in any way be used against you or your organization at some point in the future.

As you know by now, I am a believer in blogging.  With that being said, it is important to think through the purpose of your blog, the logistics of making it a success and the potential pitfalls associated with blogging.  A well-conceived, professionally written blog that provides readers with helpful information can strengthen your reputation as an expert in your field.
