PR Principle:  Priority

The January 2004 edition of our newsletter provided an overview of the Principles of Effective Public Relations.  These principles are the fundamentals; they are as important to your Public Relations effort as dribbling, passing, free throw shooting and defense are to a good basketball team.  In this issue, we will discuss the principle of Priority.

The Principle of Priority

If your Public Relations campaign is to have a snowball's chance of success it must be a priority, not an afterthought.  There is no other way.

Far too many business owners push Public Relations activities to the bottom of their priority list.  They say things like "I'm too busy" or "it's just not a high priority."  A year later, they are left wondering why their visibility hasn't increased when competitors are picking up steam and building a name for themselves.

As we have discussed in recent months, successful Public Relations efforts are defined by consistency, focus, repetition and discipline.  These defining qualities are the outgrowth of careful planning and meticulous execution, which are possible only if Public Relations is a priority activity for your organization.

If you are serious about implementing a Public Relations program to build a name for your business, you must make the time to get it done.  It won't happen on its own.  As a busy small business owner, your challenge is to exercise the discipline required to implement a focused, consistent Public Relations effort over the long haul.  If you rise to this challenge, your business' visibility and reputation will grow and improve.  If you don't, they won't.

- Frank Williams

Leadership Corner

"No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed.  No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined.  No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled.  No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined."

- Harry Emerson Fosdick, D.D.

Are you missing opportunities?

The press release is the public relations tool used to communicate your organization's accomplishments and activities to the media.  The purpose of a press release is to generate positive news coverage for your organization -- coverage which builds your name and enhances your credibility far more than a paid advertisement or company brochure.

Below are a few newsworthy opportunities for your company to distribute a press release:

-  Hiring a new employee;

-  Opening a new location;

-  Completing a major project;

-  Signing a new client;

-  Your company or a key employee wins an award;

-  A company representative gives a speech or teaches a class;

-  Hosting a seminar or other special event;

-  Launching a new product line; or

-  An employee receives a promotion.

Are you missing out?  If your company has done any of these things and has not sent out a press release, you've missed opportunities!
