Developing a PR Mindset for Your Business - Part III - Planning

by Frank Williams, President

The October issue of The Pioneer Strategist introduced the concept of developing a PR mindset for your business, and the November issue expanded on that concept by offering insight into our view of what public relations is and is not.

As stated in the October issue, the American Heritage Dictionary defines a "mindset" as a fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations.  This means that, unless you are blessed with a natural PR instinct, developing a PR mindset is about changing the way you think.

Further, if you are to develop a PR mindset for your business, public relations must become an integral component of your overall strategic mindset.  It must be a priority, not a mere afterthought.

Those who know me know that I am a big believer in planning.  Developing a strategic public relations plan and committing that plan to writing will crystallize your vision, clarify your goals, increase your focus and give you a cause to rally around.  Without a plan, all too often you will find yourself shooting from the hip with no clear focus or direction.  Further, the lack of a plan increases the likelihood that your public relations effort will be a secondary priority (at best) and have far less impact that it should.

As you strategize and plan, ask yourself the following questions:

-   What is our vision?  Where do we want our business to be in five years?

-   What is our niche?  What makes us unique?  What sets us apart from the crowd?

-   What value do we bring to the table?

-   Where do we need to be in one year in order to be on track to achieve our five-year vision?

-   What have we done well over the past year?  How can we build on those successes?

-   What were our weaknesses over the past year?  How can we improve in those areas?

-   Who are our ideal clients?  What steps can we take to increase the number of ideal clients as a percentage of our overall client base?

-   What do we need to achieve each month this year in order to be on track in one year?

These are only a few of the many questions you should consider as you develop your plan.  Setting aside some time to develop a big-picture strategy and a detailed plan of action for your organization will clarify your goals and increase your focus.  In a nutshell, planning increases your ability to develop a PR mindset for your business.

When it comes to planning, a day delayed is a day wasted.  Your competitors are planning; you should be as well.
