PR Tip:  Planning for 2007

by Frank Williams, President

If you are an entrepreneur or business owner, NOW is the time to begin planning for 2007.

Planning is critical.  Planning helps you get it right the first time.  It helps you anticipate and prepare for unexpected roadblocks and crises.  Planning empowers you to anticipate and take advantage of opportunities you might otherwise miss.  It also enables you to think long-term.

As 2006 comes to a close, I challenge you to begin thinking about 2007 and beyond.  Where do you want your business to be in two years?  Five years?  What must happen in the short run to get you there?

Thinking within the framework of your long-term business goals, decide what impact you want your Public Relations program to have.  What change do you want it to bring about?  How can your PR program help advance your overall vision for your business?  How can it complement your sales and marketing programs?  Who are your target publics?  What tools will you employ?

Using your longer-term business and communication goals as a guide, develop specific short-term objectives for 2007.  These objectives should move you in the direction of your business goals and should work to realize the desired impact of your Public Relations program.  Each objective should be specific, measurable, realistic and time-sensitive, and someone should be responsible for its completion.

Finally, develop a month-by-month timeline for implementation.  Putting your goals on paper and assigning responsibility adds a measure of accountability that helps you stay focused on getting the job done.

While this column greatly simplifies a process that can be quite sophisticated, I hope it underscores the importance of developing a plan.  Planning will help you focus your resources where they can have the impact you desire.
