Taking the Time
to Lay a Solid Foundation
by
Frank Williams, President
The
June issue
of this newsletter discussed what I believe to be the TRUE foundation of
public relations: strategy. In that article I
contended that effective communication flows from a solid strategy.
Based on my experience and observations,
both in my own business and from dealing with clients, I believe that a
high percentage of small and mid-sized businesses and other
organizations are operating with virtually no strategic communication
framework. They are, in essence, shooting from the hip. Why
is this?
One of the challenges facing anyone who
leads an organization -- especially a small one with finite resources --
is chronic "busyness." Simply put, small business owners and other
organizational leaders become so consumed by the day-to-day details of
running their organizations that they never take time to stop and think.
When their day begins, they hit the ground running and don't slow down
until the sun has set.
When we become consumed by this kind of
chronic "busyness," we are always engaged in some sort of activity -- but
are we really being productive? Let's consider this issue
from a public relations perspective. If strategy is the foundation
of an effective public relations campaign but we never set aside time
to think and strategize, are we truly being effective? Or are we
simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic? We must be
careful not to confuse activity with productivity.
I believe it is critically important to set
aside time to think and strategize. Taking time to think enables
you to clear your head, focus and crystallize your vision and goals.
In my own business, I am the most focused and most effective when I have
taken the time to do so. Taking time to strategize enables me to work
smart, not just hard.
It is easy to buy into the idea that if
you're not constantly busy and rushed that you're not working.
Don't fall for it. While it is certainly important to take action
and get things done, taking time to think will help you focus those
efforts on the right things and do them the right way. As Victor
Hugo said in the quote posted at the top of this newsletter, "A man is
not idle because he is absorbed in thought."
Take time to lay a solid foundation.
Set aside some time to think and strategize about your life and your
business. This solid foundation will enable you to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of your communication activities (and your
business in general).
