Developing a PR
Mindset for Your Business - Part VI: Ruthlessly Analyze
Every Aspect of Your Business
by
Frank Williams
The
October
2007 issue of The Pioneer Strategist introduced the concept of developing
a PR mindset for your business, and the
November
issue expanded on that concept by offering insight into our view of
what public relations is and is not.
Recent issues
have further explored the concept of developing a PR mindset for your business.
This month we will discuss the importance of
ruthlessly analyzing every aspect of your business.
Benjamin Franklin has been quoted as saying,
"A small leak can sink a great ship." This principle applies to
your organization's efforts to build a solid, credible reputation.
Little, seemingly insignificant things can quietly undermine all of the hard work you invest in
your public relations program, much like unseen termites eating away at
the foundation of your home.
Part of developing a public relations
mindset for your business involves training yourself to consistently and ruthlessly analyze
every
aspect of your business from a public relations perspective. Ask yourself these questions: "How
does this area of my business impact the way others perceive us?
Does it reinforce our message, or does it undermine it?"
Let's consider some hypothetical examples to
make the point.
Imagine that you meet someone who says he
works for a high-end jewelry store. After talking with this
person, you ask for his business card. When he gives you his card, it
is a home-made, perforated card that was obviously printed on his inkjet
printer. To put it bluntly, his home-made business card doesn't look
like something you would receive from someone who works at a legitimate
high-end jewelry store. In comparison to his desired market position,
the card looks cheap.
Next, imagine that you decide to visit a
store that advertises itself as having a warm, friendly atmosphere.
When you walk in, no one greets you. The person behind the counter
doesn't even look in your direction. In spite of this, you decide to
make a purchase. The clerk barely acknowledges your existence when you
check out, and she never cracks a smile. Now, ask yourself if your
experience supports the store's claims to have a warm, friendly
atmosphere. I think not.
As Benjamin Franklin said, "A small leak can
sink a great ship." Part of developing a PR mindset for your
business involves constantly being aware of the little things that may
be undermining your public relations efforts and taking steps to correct
them.
