About Bob Luddy

Robert L. (Bob) Luddy is a lifelong entrepreneur.  At the age of 20, while attending LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Bob opened a fiberglass manufacturing business and worked at night.  In 1967, he sold his company and was drafted into the military.

In 1976, Bob settled in Raleigh and opened Atlantic Fire Systems in a one-room facility.  Recognizing the demand for high-quality kitchen ventilation equipment, Bob purchased a sheet metal shop in 1981 and transformed it into Captive-Aire Systems, Inc.

Captive-Aire is now the nation’s leading manufacturer of commercial kitchen ventilation systems, with sales reaching $150 million in 2005.  The company, which employs 650 people in 57 offices in the United States and Canada, serves a distinguished list of clients, including independent restaurants, national chains and other public and private institutions.

INC. magazine has repeatedly named Captive-Aire one of the top 500 fastest growing private companies in America.  Captive-Aire is continually voted “Best In Class” by industry dealers and consultants, according to Foodservice Equipment & Supplies magazine.  Captive-Aire has been recognized as one of the 100 largest private companies in North Carolina (Business North Carolina magazine) and one of the top 50 fastest growing private companies in the Triangle (Triangle Business Journal).

In addition to Captive-Aire, Bob Luddy spurs other economic development in the area.  Bob founded and developed the Franklin Park Industrial Center, which has drawn over 15 entrepreneurial businesses and hundreds of jobs to Franklin and Wake counties.

Bob is a strong advocate of excellent education.  In 1998, Bob founded the Franklin Academy public charter school in Wake Forest, which now serves close to 1,000 K-12 students.  Franklin Academy has repeatedly earned high awards for educational excellence.  In 2001, Bob founded the St. Thomas More Academy in Raleigh, a classical, college-preparatory high school.  Both holistic programs focus on developing responsible, compassionate citizens, and Bob makes regular presentations to the students on building leadership.

Bob Luddy is actively involved in a wide range of civic and community organizations.  He currently serves as chairman of the board for the John William Pope Civitas Institute and is a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee on the Future of Wake County.  Bob previously served as a member of the State Government Reorganization and Privatization Committee and as co-chair of the Privatization Subcommittee.  He is a past chairman of the Franklin County Economic Development Commission.

Please attend our Friday Morning Leadership Forum on December 1st and learn more about Bob Luddy's keys to professional success.
